EP-I was to be an experimental station of vast proportions, built in a dry valley and surrounded by the Trans Antarctica Mountain Range. The brain child of Dr. John Saunders, EP-I (Environmental Project One) was build to house thousands of the world’s elite scientists from all disciplines. Its purpose, to study global warming and to assess the possibility of future generations to live in domed cities which would be totally self sufficient until the earth could heal itself from centuries of man’s mistreatment. Sixty-five men have been sent as an advance team to prepare EP-I for the thousands scheduled to follow. Shortly after arrival the men learn that ninety-seven percent of the world’s population is dying from a plague of unknown origins, including Dr. Saunders. The EP-I team is led by the homophobic Col. Dr. Bradley McCormick. Dr Saunders’ dying words to him were that if he was to successfully manage sixty-five young scientists and soldiers for the ten years recommended before they leave the hostile Antarctica, he would need to let go of his preconceived prejudices and let male with male sex flourish. What secret does the white blonde haired Russian harbor concerning the future of the project? Can Connor O’Hara the smooth pale skinned Irishmen with jet black hair trust this Russian Adonis with the secretive past? What is the relationship between Col. McCormick’s eighteen year old son and the Col.’s newly adopted son, Paul?

This is one of those instances when the reader faces an author who has an interesting story to tell and is even able to construct a convincing plot but lacks some basic technical skills to tell it well.

This is in a nutshell an M/M SF erotic novel.

The final apocalypse is quite a fashionable topic these fictional days: here there are no zombies, just the usual virus that wipes out humanity leaving a small group of men trying to survive in an enclosed but protected environment.
Mr Pride has lots of blood-chilling ideas about the further difficulties they have to face but I will not spoil them for you. I will not do it not only because it would mean telling but also because they are not his main focus.
He is more interested in outlining the everyday life of the survivors, highlighting how they cope with the loss of the future as they imagined it. Character interaction is relevant, of course, but it is their sexual interaction that commands many of the pages with very graphic sex scenes that may -or not- displease strict SF lovers.
As a lover of erotica I had nothing against the erotic and or romantic elements of the plot but did find the whole "volunteering" (I cannot spoild the concept for you, you will know when you read it) thing very contrived and unnecessary if not to add some unnecessary spice.

The ending of the book may be considered an open one or a cliffhanger if the author plans on giving us a sequel.

While the story is good and makes for a pleasant read, there are many problems that must be outlined.
- Editing is generally bad with many typos, several grammar mistakes and an annoying number of inconsistencies. For example the number of survivors is supposed to amount to 65 but there are pages where the number is clearly thought of as higher.
- Beside bad editing, plotting is also an issue with many pages when things are told and not shown.
It is true that the number of pages would have doubled but nobody would have complained about that because many interesting details are currently lacking.
- Characterization is also a problem: while nearly everyone is likeable, most if not all are not fully rounded. Just to make an example, Connor and Mika fall for each other hard and fast: while they both tell that it is not only because of the other one's looks we never understand what they actually see in each other, beside the obvious beauty.
- As a side note one could also add that Mr Pride not only portrays an elite group of survivors -always a dangerous concept betraying an unwelcome snobbish attitude- but this same elite is apparently divided into very rigid classes, everyone duly respectful towards his "betters".

To sum it up, this novel can be a fun read but it has issues and is currently quite expensive.
